Deerfield MA Real Estate, Deerfield Area and Community Information
Deerfield History
Deerfield, Massachusetts was inhabited by the Native American Pocumtuck nation when English colonists arrived to the area in 1673. When Deerfield was incorporated in 1677, the settlers signed a treaty with the Pocumtuck nation where some of the land in the new township of Pocumtuck would go to the settlers. However, regardless of the treaty, there were still conflicts for many years between the Native Americans and the English settlers over the control and use of the land. One of the mosthikingcouple.jpg historic conflicts was the Raid on Deerfield in 1704, when French and Indian Forces attacked the settlement and 56 colonists were killed. Eventually, the frontier moved north and Deerfield became a normal New England colonial town. Additional information about the Pocumtuck Nation and the events in Deerfield can be found here.
